This week the students at Lister Community School were getting the skills to discover variable stars. Our enthusiastic group was using the training images to run through the process on Muniwin to identify possible variables. They then searched the variable star index to find out whether the star has already been discovered. As these are training images, the stars have already been found by the Russian students. The students then searched for more data on the Catalina Sky Survey and downloaded this information to run through WinEffect. Using this software the students were able to determine the period and magnitude variance of the star. They are looking forward to using the new images in the coming week to make some of their own discoveries.
